Containment: Iris and Valves.

Iris and valves are among the most widely adopted solutions in CSV Containment’s glove boxes.

But why are iris and valves so crucial for containment solutions? And what are the most useful configurations for discharging powders into a reactor? Let’s start with the well-known DIT® systems-EPDM elastomers that allow for universal drum loading. They are called “universal” because, once the drum is raised by a lifter, the iris can adapt to a wide range of drum diameters by tightening around them. It’s important to highlight that all processes can be fully automated or managed manually.

A Wide Range of Solutions.

Depending on containment requirements, one or two iris systems may be installed, including in horizontal positions. Their finishes can be customised with special acid-resistant coatings, as shown in the detail in the image. All rigid isolators by CSV Containment are designed and tailored to client needs. Some configurations enhance station versatility, such as the integration of hydraulic pistons to lift the glove box to the optimal discharge height. However, this is not the only reason for such customisation. Depending on the client’s technology, stations may require different discharge valves with varying dimensions and space requirements-on a case-by-case basis.

Valves for Every Need.

Each solution offered by companies providing high-containment valves features unique characteristics. Leading manufacturers offer a full set of accessories to streamline operations and standardise processes across various working environments. Clients already using a specific system often align all relevant stations to that standard. CSV Containment’s glove boxes can be equipped with 4″ or 6″ discharge outlets, compatible with all valve types. In many cases, it is beneficial to include a sleeve between the outlet and the valve-especially with disposable valves-to facilitate easier connection. Additionally, since disposable sleeves are not made of stainless steel, they can act as shock absorbers during drum handling operations. In the field of stainless steel valve solutions, ChargePoint remains a benchmark in the industry, with a well-established market presence and a comprehensive range of accessories and bags, enhanced by the recent introduction of the PuroVaso® system.

Bags, Bottles and Butterfly Valves.

The UK-based company also produces disposable passive valves, which can be paired with stainless steel active valves. The active valve remains mounted on the reactor port, while the disposable passive valve connects via a sleeve to the isolator. Bags can also be directly connected for discharge into the reactor. All our reactor charging systems can be connected with any kind of valve on the market, be they single-use or reusable, butterfly or not.

Lastly, the German company Andocksysteme, represented by our agents Tiselab in Spain and Servolift in North America, offers both disposable and non-disposable twin-valve systems. The single-use version couples two passive valves, operating as a split valve. We recently published a project case study for the Spanish market, where we presented all potential solutions to the client. The German manufacturer was ultimately selected as it was already supplying the client with Avax systems for other loading stations. Tiselab, Andocksysteme’s distributor for Spain, collaborated directly with CSV Containment to deliver the most suitable product for the client’s loading station.
